Sparse hospital ward, early evening — Nurse Lily Morton attends to Jack’s arm with gentle diligence, her eyes meeting his in a mix of stern focus and amused fascination. Jack grins, cheeks flushed. Soft golden lamplight glows between them.

Matron’s Warning

Hospital corridor, fluorescent and forbidding — Matron Edith Groves confronts Lily, towering over her and gesturing firmly toward the ward. Other nurses scurry past, stealing nervous glances.

Unlikely Allies
